Risk Management Expertise

At Darwin, each risk management and client service consultant has more than 20 years of experience in clinical, educational, and legal settings. Darwin’s risk management team is comprised of health care attorneys, certified risk management professionals, registered nurses, and advanced practice registered nurses that collaborate to design effective risk management programs for Darwin’s health care policyholders.

Clinical
Darwin’s risk management consultants are registered nurses with advanced degrees and practical, hands-on experience in acute, ambulatory, long-term, and managed care.

Educational
Darwin’s expertise extends to curriculum development and instruction for medical students in the areas of health care law and ethics. Beyond classroom instruction, Darwin’s staff engages in educational program development in clinical settings and publishes comprehensive risk management, legal, and insurance articles.

Risk Management
Darwin’s risk management consultants have all earned the designation of Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) and are active members of the American Society of Healthcare Risk Managers (ASHRM).

Bios of Darwin's senior risk management professionals are provided below.

Susan R. Chmieleski, APRN, CPHRM, JD

Susan is responsible for all client and risk management services at Darwin. She provides consulting and client services to the company's health care policyholders, helping them assess and manage their organizational risk. Susan has written numerous comprehensive patient education tools and brochures, and is author to several published risk management articles. She has been a regular presenter at the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management annual conference and other regional meetings. Susan is also a frequent presenter to the University of Connecticut Health System ethics committee, and regularly publishes articles in the system’s perinatal newsletter, UNICORN. She also teaches health care law and ethics to second year medical students at the University of Connecticut medical school.

Susan obtained a BS degree, summa cum laude, from the University of Hartford. She earned her JD degree from the University of Connecticut School of Law, where she was editor-in-chief of the Connecticut Insurance Law Journal. Susan holds a Connecticut Nursing License, is a board-certified Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, and a Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management. She is licensed to practice law in Connecticut and a member of the Connecticut and Hartford County Bar Associations. She is also the Vice Chair of the Litigation and Risk Management Committee of the Health Law Section of the American Bar Association.

Laura P. Martinez, BSN, MS, CPHRM

Laura provides risk management education and consultation to Darwin’s medical professional policyholders, helping them assess and manage their organizational risk. She works with policyholders to develop individual action plans to mitigate potential loss based on their unique exposures and risk management needs. Laura also assists Darwin’s health care clients with ongoing medical educational programs and policy and procedure review and development.

Laura’s nursing career spans 26 years in which she gained practical, hands-on experience in orthopedics, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, hospice, managed care, and hospital administration. As a clinician, her work has focused on medical and vocational case management in casualty claims, including workers’ compensation and liability. Laura is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, Disability Management Specialist, and Case Manager. She is a licensed insurance adjuster in Texas and holds an Associates degree in risk management.

Laura is bi-lingual (Spanish and English) and has earned a BSN degree from Texas Christian University and an MS degree in rehabilitation counseling from the University of North Texas. She is also a member of the Case Management Society of America and American Society for Healthcare Risk Management.
